Dunhill Desire Black

Scents of Style

It’s the final adornment before an evening well-lived. Finding a signature scent amongst the abundance of musky, floral, citrus or even woodsy notes is a time-honoured tradition amongst the many perfume counters and white-glove perfumeries across Europe.

Basic Addition

Sometimes an idea for an article comes from an experience, a question, or maybe a new launch. The seed might be planted by something that piques my interest as a development in the industry, which I want to nourish into fruition by further research – or as with the last issue, a huge change in the industry itself. I am the first to admit that the plans I had for my upcoming articles have had some huge changes, in order to stay reactive and true to the events of the past 18 months. As the seasons meandered in and out of lockdown, we somehow flew from month to month. And…

The Industry’s Pandemic

I’ve spoken many times over the undulating course of the last year about Covid and its effect on the industry I not only work within, but love dearly. More than just survival, the stirring efforts made by so many across beauty and wellness to bring their customers closer to their brand is something that deserves celebrating in itself.

10 Of The Best – Lip Balms

‘A kiss is a secret which takes the lips for the ear’. Except it’s cold out, with the seasonal weather making even the most sensual secret into a hoarse whisper. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve pressed a balm to the rest of my face when donning my facemask, the material either sticking to any salve or else the feeling of cotton chafing my un-balmed lips. Finding the perfect lip balm has always been a quest of mine, but now we have further compounding factors affecting performance. So, tried and tested over the last few months, here are my top ten.  Best for SPF, think of Lip Defence as…

The Beauty Passport Goes To Korea – With Kōsame

The Beauty Passport, as a series, was born from a particular passion I indulge when travelling. I deign not to bring home tourist trinkets; photos and memories will do for me. And as much as I enjoy perusing fashion whilst away, I know from experience that falling into the moment with an impulsively-purchased pashmina I’ll never wear again will only frustrate me when unpacking at home. For me, the holy-grail purchases from my travels are the beauty items I can’t get back home (and some of the most treasured times are the moments I spend sneaking off in pursuit of them). The best liquid eyeliner I’ve ever used was from…

2020 Vision – The beauty in tech

If there is one thing to say for this industry, it’s adaptive. You can maintain a personal training programme, enjoy hand-mixed lipstick customisation with Code-8 Virtual Colour Lab, or even book a skincare consultation with Glowday, all online.

January, resolute

The turn of a new year brings with it the promise of a fresh start, big plans and personal reinvention. Making new habits stick, ridding ourselves of any negativity… We all know that small changes can be some of the easiest to stick to, but grand plans are always more eye-catching.

The Beauty Passport, our second journey

It’s been a time of change, adjustment, and uncertainty, but I turn towards the future with hope, amongst a little trepidation. Some may have snuck in some travel in the late summer months. Personally, with three European trips canceled by quarantine changes or airline cancellations, it will be a little while longer before I take my Beauty Passport internationally. As the winter months draw in and hygge vibes heighten as the days shorten, let’s take another trip around the UK for inspiration to shake up your skincare routine, add new colour to your space, or surprise someone you may be missing whilst distance may be separating us. For those of…

The Beauty Passport

I’ve never considered myself to be driven by numbers. I’ve also never felt the burning desire to open a line of conversation with a statistic, but we find ourselves in situations without precedent.

Spring into self care

PHA’s provide a shallow exfoliation to gently brighten skin, perfect for pre-makeup. Lemon, sugar cane, licorice root and chamomile condition the skin to leave it glowing even more. Massage on, leave for 15 minutes and remove with a damp washcloth. Embark on your look for the day.

The New 20s

One thing that I get asked about more than you would ever know is personal skincare. We all know that instantly recognisable line from social media: “My makeup routine, which has of course been heavily requested”.

Skin Deep

It’s usually around the end of February, after several months of cold, rain and wind that my skin just gives up. No matter how many creams and potions I apply, nothing can alleviate the dry dullness that’s become synonymous with these winter months. I needed an intervention. Spa Illuminata, located just off Park Lane, is a tall Victorian building that looks like a high-end corner shop. If it wasn’t for the large gold lettering, I would have walked straight past. Once inside, it was obviously nothing of the sort. The decor gives the illusion of high ceilings being held up by Roman-esque pillars; the floor and fixtures are all marble…

Bedford Lodge Spa & Hotel

Riding the jam-packed Jubilee Line on a Monday morning with passengers grimacing at each other in silent solidarity, I decided I needed a break. Not just a break from work, but a break from the city. A mid-morning trawl of the internet brought up the Bedford Lodge Spa and Hotel, an eighteenth-century hunting lodge that had been converted into a hotel in the 1940s. The Hotel is in Newmarket, about an hour and a half from London. Far enough away to feel like you’re out of the city, but not so far that you spend the majority of your weekend in a car. Bedford Lodge is set in 3 acres…

Braun SkinSpa Finally, an excuse to get rid of your shaving gel, blunt razors and that half empty tube of hair removal cream you’ve had in the bathroom draw for the past year. The Braun SkinSpa has. it. all. Close-Grip-Technology makes the epilator tool one of the most effective I’ve used, removing hairs as short as 0.5mm. You can feel the power of the machine as it picks up speed in your hand. Nought to sixty in under 3 seconds. Plus, switching between attachments couldn’t be simpler and more fiddle-free. The shaver tool is equally as efficient at removing hair, almost as close a shave as a razor. All functions…

2013 Gift Guide

It can be a chore we know, Christmas shopping is a bore at the best of times, unless you are working to a one for me one for you program. This year we hope to simplify with a little guidance from the team on what works.

Highbrow Makeup

Our beauty editor Gemma Phelan discusses semi-permanent make-up. Whether you’re the victim of overzealous plucking, Alopecia, or, like me, you were simply not blessed with Cara Delevingne-esqe brows to mould and shape as you please, semi-permanent make-up may be just the ticket. I have spent the last decade pencilling in my eyebrows and although I had perfected the art, the thought of being free of this daily chore is something that’s excited me for years. Undergoing any kind of permanent make-up procedure is daunting. The result is going to be on your face for 2-5 years, so choosing the right consultant is paramount. Be warned, there are hundreds of shysters…
